DEVOTION 50: “The Death of Jospeh” coming out of Gen. 50
Joseph, just like his father Jacob had the Word.
Joseph prophesied to his brothers that God will visit them, and God through Moses did.
He requested of his brothers that they keep not his bones in Egypt for he knew he will be raised up from the dead some day.
Joseph’s final words:
Let’s read:
Genesis 50:1-5 “And Joseph fell upon his father's face, and wept upon him, and kissed him. [2] And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel. [3] And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days. [4] And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying, [5] My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again.”
The Word will bring us to only one burying place, which is in Christ. We are buried in Christ, raised in a newness of life with Him, reigning in Heavenly places with Him, living today in us in the Form of the Holy Spirit. This is the burying place of the believer in the Word.
When Ruth heard the Word, she said I must be buried where Naomi who had the Word of God is buried, for Ruth saw the Word in the life of Naomi.
Ruth 1:16-17 “And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: [17] Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.”
The Word will always bring the man or woman to die in Christ, and be buried and raised in Holy Spirit.
We continue our reading:
Genesis 50:6-13 “And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear. [7] And Joseph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, [8] And all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father's house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen. [9] And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company. [10] And they came to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days. [11] And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it was called Abel-mizraim, which is beyond Jordan. [12] And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them: [13] For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a buryingplace of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre.”
The burying place was then the Holy Land. Today, it’s the Holy Spirit. The old Jacob died in Christ so that one day he will be raised in the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 27:50-53 “Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. [51] And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; [52] And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, [53] And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.”
That was Abel coming out.
That was Noah coming out.
That was Abraham coming out.
That was Isaac coming out.
That was Jacob coming out.
That was Joseph coming out.
That was Moses, Joshua, Ruth, David, John the Baptist, and the whole family of those buried in Christ coming out.
The Same Holy Spirit that raised Christ from the dead is the Only Power able to raise any believer from the dead. Today, in Christ is the death and burial place of the Believer.
Romans 6:3-5 “Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? [4] Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. [5] For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection.”
Today, we walk in the likeness of His resurrection. Walking in the same power (Holy Spirit) that raised Him from the dead, manifesting the same things He manifested.
We continue our reading:
Genesis 50:14-24 “And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father. [15] And when Joseph's brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him. [16] And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying, [17] So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him. [18] And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants. [19] And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God? [20] But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive. [21] Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them. [22] And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father's house: and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years. [23] And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of the third generation : the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph's knees. [24] And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.”
Jesus likewise told the disciples,I go but do not leave you comfortless.
John 14:16-17 “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; [17] Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”
Joseph was promising his brethren the Holy Land (a place of rest).
Jesus Christ promised us the Holy Spirit (the Comfort Spirit of rest).
We conclude our reading:
Genesis 50:25-26 “And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence. [26] So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.”
We are buried in not the Holy land but in the Holy Spirit by believing Christ, and receiving Him in the Form of the Holy Spirit.
Joseph believed the Word, had to be buried in the Holy Land.
We believe Christ, and must be buried in the Holy Spirit.
Acts 19:2-6 “He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. [3] And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. [4] Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. [5] When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. [6] And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.”
Without hesitation, Paul buried them in the Holy Spirit by baptizing them in the Name of Jesus Christ.
If we believe the Word, we will act on the Word.
Let the Word bring you into the Holy Spirit baptism. Believe and confess Christ as we’ve revealed Him from the First Adam. We cannot afford to skip any steps in our walk with the Lord. He is the Same God yesterday, today, and forever, in Christ!
