“Not Ours  But His Righteousness”

Reference: Psalms Chapter 4

Righteousness is not something we do. Righteousness is Who lives in us.

An apple vine will bear apple fruit. A lemon vine will bear lemon. A grape vine will bear grape fruit.

Righteousness is the Vine of God.

John 15:1-2 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. [2] Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.”

Jesus Christ the Vine in any man or woman will bear the fruits of Christ. Things shall be done in the name of the Vine.

Mark 16:17-18 “And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; [18] They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.”

Men and women in Christ are therefore to be the fruit-bearing branches of Him (Righteousness).

Notice that the Vine doesn’t bear the fruit but the branches.

David speaks to the Vine.

Let’s read:

Psalm 4:1 “Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.”

Jesus Christ is the Righteousness of God.
We receive this Righteousness by faith in Christ and His finished work of salvation.

Galatians 2:20-21 “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. [21] I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.”

We receive His righteousness by crucifixion, death, burial, and resurrection with Him.

His righteousness comes to us no other way.

We continue our reading:

Psalm 4:2-3 “O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing? Selah. [3] But know that the LORD hath set apart him that is godly for himself: the LORD will hear when I call unto him.”

The godly man or woman is the one who has received God in them.
God was first received in men and women on the Day of Pentecost.

Acts 2:1-4 “And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. [2] And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. [3] And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. [4] And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

He was God the Father Who walked on earth as God the Son about two thousand years ago.

John 14:8-10 “Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. [9] Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? [10] Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.”

Today, He lives in men and women as God the Holy Ghost. A godly man or woman is the one indwelled by God the Holy Ghost.

We continue our reading:

Psalm 4:4-5 “Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah. [5] Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the LORD.”

The sacrifice of Righteousness was offered when Jesus Christ went to the Cross.
Every animal sacrifice made prior to this act was a shadow of righteousness. The substance of righteousness was presented to the world on the Cross.

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

We receive Righteousness by believing (applying our faith to ) what God has finished for us through the death of Christ on the Cross.

We conclude our reading:

Psalm 4:6-8 “There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. [7] Thou hast put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased. [8] I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.”

Joy is a fruit of the Vine.
Peace is a fruit of the Vine.
Safety (shield) is a fruit Salvation (the Vine).

He was the God of righteousness to David, and Jesus Christ to us today.
He is the same God yesterday, today, and forever.

Receive the Vine to bear His fruit. BELIEVE and confess Christ the Vine as we’ve revealed Him from the First Adam. God is our Righteousness, in Christ!
