DEVOTION 192: “Take Off Your Shoes, Joshua” coming out of Josh. 5

The same words to Moses at the Burning bush are said to Joshua. The same pillar of fire that appeared to Moses appears to Joshua in the form of a man.

He is Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Let’s read:

Joshua 5:1-9 “And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel. [2] At that time the LORD said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time. [3] And Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins. [4] And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt. [5] Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised. [6] For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: unto whom the LORD sware that he would not shew them the land, which the LORD sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey. [7] And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way. [8] And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole. [9] And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.”

Circumcision, a type of the work of the Holy Spirit removed the reproach of Egypt off the children of Isreal. The action separated an Israelite from an Egyptian.
Today, when we our hearts are circumcised by the Holy Spirit through the fire baptism, the reproach of the world is removed. We are separated from Egypt (the world) unto God.  Carnality is removed, and we become precious jewels of God as a result, and enemies to the reproached world.

God is a reproach to the world as the world is a reproach to God. Either we are a reproach to God or a reproach to the world. There is no in-between.

Understand circumcision of the genitalia was an uncomfortable and in some cases a fearful experience. Likewise the Holy Spirit baptism may be an uncomfortable and fearful for some but it’s a prescription of God that will change the man or woman whose heart is after the Lord.

All prescriptions of God are vital. Every Word is vital.

We must escape the reproach of God in oneness with Him.

Jesus Christ was a reproach on the Cross.  He had to be a reproach on the Cross before He could give us life.

You will not be useful to the world unless you become a reproach to it like the Lord.

The world will make fun of the man or woman baptized with the Holy Spirit but that’s the greatest prescription from God to the believer.

We continue our reading:

Joshua 5:10-11 “And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho. [11] And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the selfsame day.”

They will no longer depend on manna. They have now come unto the Promised Holy Land.
When we come through justification, sanctification, and ultimately the Promised Holy Spirit baptism, we no longer depend on the shadow of manna, but the true substantive Bread of life.

John 6:49-50 “Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. [50] This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.”

We eat the Bread by believing the Bread (the Word). The Word (Bread) will become life unto us.  In our identification in His life, crucifixion, burial, resurrection, ascension, reigning in heavenly places with Him, and now living in us in the form of the Holy Spirit, the Bread has now become life eternal unto us.
We are not waiting to have eternal life after we die but we have eternal life today because we already died with Him on the Cross and raised with Him seventy two hours later. We are eating the Bread of life through believing (faith).

John 6:53-58 “Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. [54] Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. [55] For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. [56] He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. [57] As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. [58] This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.”

We eat the Bread (Word) of life by believing the whole Word. Not just a segment of it but the whole Word. Eat the Bread and throw away all your doubts. This is abundant life.

We conclude our reading:

Joshua 5:12-15 “And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year. [13] And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? [14] And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? [15] And the captain of the LORD'S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.”

The same profound words to Moses come to Joshua.
For us to know Him, we must first lose our shoes. The Word of God reveals our wretchedness. We stand on Holy Ground whenever we approach the Word of God. Jesus Christ is the Word of God. He is the One who appeared to Moses at the Burning bush and appears to Joshua. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Lose your shoes to the Word. BELIEVE (eat) and confess Christ the Word as we’ve revealed Him from the First Adam. The Bread of Heaven, available, only in Christ!
