DEVOTION 191: “Remember the Sign” coming out of Josh. 4
He is the God of signs.
To Noah, it was the sign of the rainbow after a flood.
To Abraham it was the sign of a nation out of the barren womb of Sarah.
To Moses, it was a sign of a pillar of cloud and fire after walking on dry ground through the Red Sea.
To Hagar, it was a sign of water on a parched land.
Genesis 21:16,19 “And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bowshot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept. [19] And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.”
To Joshua, it’s twelve stones after walking on dry ground through the Jordan River.
Let’s read:
Joshua 4:1-7 “And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over Jordan, that the LORD spake unto Joshua, saying, [2] Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man, [3] And command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of Jordan, out of the place where the priests' feet stood firm, twelve stones, and ye shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the lodging place, where ye shall lodge this night. [4] Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man: [5] And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel: [6] That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones? [7] Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.”
The signs are a reminder to all future generations of what God is doing.
Today, He has given us the ultimate sign.
Isaiah 7:14 “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
The ultimate sign of God is Emmanuel; God with us.
Matthew 1:22-23 “Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, [23] Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.”
God with us in the form of a Man, and now in us.
This is the ultimate sign. This was the plan of God from the very beginning.; God dwelling in the man Adam.
Adam was the First son of God, in the image of God, indwelled by God by His Word.
Luke 3:38 “Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.”
Jesus Christ (the First Adam’s substitute) in the image of God, indwelled by God by His Word.
Colossians 1:15 “Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:”
The plan of God remains that man become signs of God; in the image of God, indwelled by the Spirit of God.
John 14:18-20 “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. [19] Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. [20] At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.”
This is the Day of Pentecost when God was not only to be among men but came to dwell in man, bringing man to his original creation.
John 14:17 “Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”
That’s the ultimate plan of God. The same plan that was in the Garden comes to fruition; man as the habitation of God.
We continue our reading:
Joshua 4:8-22 “And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there. [9] And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests which bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day. [10] For the priests which bare the ark stood in the midst of Jordan, until every thing was finished that the LORD commanded Joshua to speak unto the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua: and the people hasted and passed over. [11] And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over, that the ark of the LORD passed over, and the priests, in the presence of the people. [12] And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh, passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spake unto them: [13] About forty thousand prepared for war passed over before the LORD unto battle, to the plains of Jericho. [14] On that day the LORD magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life. [15] And the LORD spake unto Joshua, saying, [16] Command the priests that bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of Jordan. [17] Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, Come ye up out of Jordan. [18] And it came to pass, when the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD were come up out of the midst of Jordan, and the soles of the priests' feet were lifted up unto the dry land, that the waters of Jordan returned unto their place, and flowed over all his banks, as they did before. [19] And the people came up out of Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, in the east border of Jericho. [20] And those twelve stones, which they took out of Jordan, did Joshua pitch in Gilgal. [21] And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones? [22] Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.”
The sign is always for a memorial. Jesus said remember the Sign.
1 Corinthians 11:24-25 “And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. [25] After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.”
We remember the Sign in communion. Not just the eating or drinking but the fellowship or communion with Him.
Today, Jesus Christ, the ultimate Sign, is the written Word with us, the Holy Word in us in the form of the Holy Spirit.
He (the Word) is a memorial forever.
Matthew 24:35 “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”
We will therefore commune with Him forever.
We conclude our reading:
Joshua 4:23-24 “For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over: [24] That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the LORD your God for ever.”
The Sign is the Hand of the Lord. Jesus Christ, the ultimate sign is the Hand of the LORD. This is our daily communion —one with the Hand of the Lord.
We become the hand of the LORD when we identify with Him in His life, crucifixion, burial, resurrection, ascension, and now dwelling in us in the form of the Holy Spirit.
The ultimate Sign is not just the First Adam’s substitute but our substitute.
He is the substitute for Adam and the substitute for you in Christ. He takes our place so we can take His place in identification.
Let the ultimate Sign draw you to identification. BELIEVE, and confess Christ the Word of God as we’ve revealed Him from the First Adam. Remember the Sign of God, in Christ!
