Devotion 171

DEVOTION 171: “Presumption” coming out of Deu. 18

We presume God is with us because of previous experiences, miracles or victories. Presumption is very easy for the Believer. Samson presumed the Lord was with him but that was not so.

Judges 16:20 “And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.”

This was a man greatly used by God but when he stepped outside the Word of God, he had stepped outside of God. For God is His Word. The results was humiliation and ultimately death with the enemies whom he was raised to destroy.

Judges 16:21,25,30 “But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house. [25] And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson, that he may make us sport. And they called for Samson out of the prison house; and he made them sport: and they set him between the pillars. [30] And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he slew at his death were more than they which he slew in his life.”

The enemies that Samson was raised to destroy were the same enemies that brought his downfall because Samson had departed from the Word of God. Samson presumed God was with him because of the promises, miracles, and victories. He was unaware the promises of God were linked to staying with His Word.
The same principle applies today. The promises of God are tied to the heeding of His Word.

A slight deviation from the Word is a slight deviation from God. For God is His Word. A slight deviation from the Word is all it takes to cause us many problems. A slight deviation from the Word by Eve is the cause of every darkness, death, and disease.

God warns Isreal of presumption.

Let’s read:

Deuteronomy 18:1-2 “The priests the Levites, and all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and his inheritance. [2] Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren: the LORD is their inheritance, as he hath said unto them.”

The priests were shadows of Jesus Christ. They needed no inheritance for God was the inheritance.
Today in Christ, we are kings and priests unto God. We need no inheritance, for God is our inheritance, Jesus Christ is our portion!

We continue our reading:

Deuteronomy 18:3-6 “And this shall be the priest's due from the people, from them that offer a sacrifice, whether it be ox or sheep; and they shall give unto the priest the shoulder, and the two cheeks, and the maw. [4] The firstfruit also of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the first of the fleece of thy sheep, shalt thou give him. [5] For the LORD thy God hath chosen him out of all thy tribes, to stand to minister in the name of the LORD, him and his sons for ever. [6] And if a Levite come from any of thy gates out of all Israel, where he sojourned, and come with all the desire of his mind unto the place which the LORD shall choose.”

God chose the priests, the sacrifice, and the place . All pointed to Jesus Christ the ultimate Priest, Sacrifice, and Place of worship.

We continue our reading:

Deuteronomy 18:7-13 “Then he shall minister in the name of the LORD his God, as all his brethren the Levites do, which stand there before the LORD. [8] They shall have like portions to eat, beside that which cometh of the sale of his patrimony. [9] When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. [10] There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, [11] Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. [12] For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. [13] Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God.”

We are perfected by staying with the Word. The Word is perfect.

We continue our reading:

Deuteronomy 18:14-19 “For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do. [15] The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; [16] According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not. [17] And the LORD said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken. [18] I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. [19] And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.”

The Lord will judge us not by our denominations, religions, dogmas or creeds. He will judge us by His Word.

We continue our reading:

Deuteronomy 18:20 “But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.”

Presuming God is with them, many are deep in false doctrine. Sin, sickness, and spiritual death are the result, for they are not shielded by the Word.
The Word will always bring us to the Cross. The Cross will always bring us to Pentecost. Pentecost will bring us into oneness with God just like He made Adam in the beginning. The same plan of God. He is the same God yesterday, today, and forever.

We conclude our reading:

Deuteronomy 18:21-22 “And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? [22] When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.”

The true prophet is one with God in Word. The Word of God becomes his word for only God knows the future.
The presumptuous prophet is out of line with God for he is out of line with the Word.

Balaam started out a true prophet.

Numbers 24:15-17 “And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said: [16] He hath said, which heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the most High, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open: [17] I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth.”

Yet Balaam died a presumptuous prophet for he was out of line with the Word.

Numbers 31:8,16 “And they slew the kings of Midian, beside the rest of them that were slain; namely, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian: Balaam also the son of Beor they slew with the sword. [16] Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the LORD.”

Let the Word of God keep us from preemption. BELIEVE, and confess Christ the Word as we’ve revealed Him from the First Adam. Stay with the Word. He is your portion, in Christ!
