“And the Spirit of God Came upon Saul”

Reference: 1 Samuel Chapter 11

Let’s read:

1 Samuel 11:1-2 “Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabesh–gilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee. [2] And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.”

The two spirits are at war throughout creation. The Spirit of God and the spirit of Satan. This war started in heaven when iniquity was found in Satan as he wanted to be God.

Ezekiel 28:12-16 “Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. [13] Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. [14] Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. [15] Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. [16] By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.”

Men and women live and die but the war between the two spirits rages on.

The spirits continue to war by just moving from person to person . He was the same Spirit that moved from Elijah, to Elisha, and to John the Baptist. Different people but the same Spirit. Likewise, it was the same demonic spirit that moved from the serpent, to Cain to the group at the Tower of Babel, to the enemies of Israel (Pharaoh, Herod and others) to Judas, and ultimately the Antichrist.

The same two spirits at war, just different people at different points in time . That’s why Paul made this comment.

Ephesians 6:12 “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

One therefore cannot survive this war of the spirit without the indwelling Holy Spirit.

When Christ was crucified, Judas also hanged himself on a tree. When Christ left the scene to Heaven with the Spirit, the demonic spirit of Judas also left the scene. Christ has now sent back the same Spirit unto the Church on the Day of Pentecost. So has the demonic spirit returned in the form of the Antichrist . Same two spirits at war, using different people.

Today, an individual has either the Spirit of Christ (the Holy Spirit) or the spirit of Satan (the Antichrist).

We continue our reading:

1 Samuel 11:3-6 “And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee. [4] Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept. [5] And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh. [6] And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.”

The same Spirit on Samuel came upon Saul. The Spirit was not Samuel or Saul but God. It was not Saul’s anger but God’s.

The same war but different people.

We conclude our reading:

1 Samuel 11:7-15 “And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent. [8] And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand. [9] And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh–gilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad. [10] Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you. [11] And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together. [12] And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death. [13] And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel. [14] Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there. [15] And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.”

Today, the war continues between the Spirit of Christ and the spirit of the Antichrist. The Holy Spirit of God verses the demonic spirit of Satan.

The same war, only at different generations!

One therefore cannot survive this world without being indwelled with the Holy Spirit.
We must be filled with the Holy Spirit or we are at the losing end of the war.

Let the Spirit of God come and dwell in you. BELIEVE and confess Christ the Word as we’ve revealed Him from the First Adam. The same war. The same two spirits. The same results every time. You choose your side by unbelief or faith,  in Christ!
