“Christ in Samuel”

Reference: 1 Samuel Chapter 7

What makes a prophet is the Spirit of Christ in them.

Isaiah could only write about things that happened hundreds of years after his death because he had the Spirit of Christ in him. Isaiah as a man could not know that a voice will cry for the preparation of the way of the Lord.

Isaiah 40:3 “The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.”

About six hundred years later, the voice cried in the wilderness.

Matthew 3:1-3 “In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, [2] And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. [3] For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.”

Isaiah could only write about John the Baptist because of the Spirit of Christ in him.

The prophet Moses, like Christ, threw himself on the line for the children of Israel because Moses had the Spirit of Christ in him.

Exodus 32:10-11 “Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation. [11] And Moses besought the LORD his God, and said, LORD, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?”

The prophet Joseph, with the Spirit of Christ in him, was hated by his brethren and loved by His father just like Christ.

A true prophet is evidenced by the Spirit of Jesus Christ in them.

The Spirit of Christ in Samuel evidenced.

Let’s read:

1 Samuel 7:1-2 “And the men of Kirjath–jearim came, and fetched up the ark of the LORD, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the LORD. [2] And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjath–jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after the LORD.”

The Ark of God was sitting in Abinadab’s house for twenty years while the people perished because they didn’t know how to handle the Ark. They did not have the Word which had instructed them how to handle the Ark.

Deuteronomy 10:8 “At that time the LORD separated the tribe of Levi, to bear the ark of the covenant of the LORD, to stand before the LORD to minister unto him, and to bless in his name, unto this day.”

They sat in darkness because of the absence of the Word, and today many sit in darkness because of the absence of the same Word in their lives.

We continue our reading:

1 Samuel 7:3-9 “And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines. [4] Then the children of Israel did put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, and served the LORD only. [5] And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the LORD. [6] And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the LORD. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh. [7] And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines. [8] And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines. [9] And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him.”

The Spirit of Christ in Samuel cried for the salvation of Israel just as Jesus cried for their salvation.

Matthew 23:37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!”

The same Spirit in a man or woman will make them cry for the salvation of their family, town, city, nation, or world.

We conclude our reading:

1 Samuel 7:10-17 “And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel. [11] And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Beth–car. [12] Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Eben–ezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us. [13] So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel: and the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. [14] And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites. [15] And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. [16] And he went from year to year in circuit to Beth–el, and Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those places. [17] And his return was to Ramah; for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar unto the LORD.”

The Spirit of Christ in a man or woman will always keep them at the altar of the LORD.. This is where God meets men and women. The altar is a type of the Cross of Christ. It’s the only place God can take away the sin of men and women, and be one with them.

The Spirit of Christ in Samuel brought Israel to the altar where victory was found.

Let the Word bring the Spirit of Christ  in you. BELIEVE and confess Christ the Word as we’ve revealed Him from the First Adam. The same Spirit yesterday, today, and forever, in Christ!
