“But My People Will Not Hearken To My Voice”

Reference: Psalms Chapter 81

It was the problem in Israel through the wilderness.
It was the problem in the Garden of Eden.
It’s the problem in this world today.

Men and women will not hearken to the voice of God. They do not believe His Word.
They rejected the Word that came to them by the Prophets
They rejected the Word of God when He walked on earth

Hebrews 1:1-2 “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, [2] Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds.”

They reject the voice of the Holy Spirit today.

Asaph reminds the people why they should hearken to the voice of God.

Let’s  read:

Psalm 81:1-7 “Sing aloud unto God our strength: make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob. [2] Take a psalm, and bring hither the timbrel, the pleasant harp with the psaltery. [3] Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day. [4] For this was a statute for Israel, and a law of the God of Jacob. [5] This he ordained in Joseph for a testimony, when he went out through the land of Egypt: where I heard a language that I understood not. [6] I removed his shoulder from the burden: his hands were delivered from the pots. [7] Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee; I answered thee in the secret place of thunder: I proved thee at the waters of Meribah. Selah.”

He reminded them of how God delivered them from their bitter days.

Exodus 15:22-26 “So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water. [23] And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah. [24] And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink? [25] And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them, [26] And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.”

The condition is always the same.if we will hearken unto the voice of God, He will deliver us from every bitterness.

We continue our reading:

Psalm 81:8-11 “Hear, O my people, and I will testify unto thee: O Israel, if thou wilt hearken unto me; [9] There shall no strange god be in thee; neither shalt thou worship any strange god. [10] I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it. [11] But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me.”

But they would not hearken to His voice.
When we reject the voice of God, He rejects us.

God does not need man to live. It’s man that needs God to live.

We conclude our reading:

Psalm 81:12-16 “So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: and they walked in their own counsels. [13] Oh that my people had hearkened unto me, and Israel had walked in my ways! [14] I should soon have subdued their enemies, and turned my hand against their adversaries. [15] The haters of the LORD should have submitted themselves unto him: but their time should have endured for ever. [16] He should have fed them also with the finest of the wheat: and with honey out of the rock should I have satisfied thee.”

But they will not hearken to His voice.

It’s the cause of sin. It’s the cause of sickness. Its the cause of poverty. It’s the cause of death. It’s called unbelief!

Hearken unto the voice of God. BELIEVE and confess Christ the Word as we’ve revealed Him from the First Adam. His Voice makes the difference, in Christ!
