Devotion 26
DEVOTION 26: “Receiving the Birthright” coming out of Gen. 26
Esau despised his birthright because of unbelief. It’s this unbelief that kept them in the wilderness from entering into His rest.
Hebrews 3:18-19 “And to whom swear he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not? [19] So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.”
We sin because of unbelief. The nature of the unbeliever is sin.
The believer sins not (does not intentionally sin) because they believe the Word. They know the Word and believe the Word that sin comes to steal, kill, and destroy.
When we believe the Word, we are to become the Word (oneness with God). To cease from all our thoughts and ideas for His), and the Word will create for us what we need to reflect the Word.
Jacob believed the Word (the birthright) while Esau despised the Word.
The believer in Christ (the Word) is called in Him. The unbeliever in Christ is not called in Him.
John 6:44 “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.”
God calls some body-parts to be eyes, and some to be toes. Not all body parts are eyes.
God did the calling even before the foundation of the world.
The believer was chosen in Christ even before the foundation of the world.
Ephesians 1:4-5 “According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: [5] Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.”
The believer in the Word (Christ) was redeemed even before the foundation of the World.
1 Peter 1:18-20 “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; [19] But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: [20] Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,”
Abraham was chosen before the foundation of the World, he believed, and so was Isaac.
Let’s read:
Genesis 26:1-4 “And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar. [2] And the Lord appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of: [3] Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; [4] And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.”
The Word of God comes to all men and women in one form or another. The difference is in those who are called and those who are not. Isaac was called even before the foundation of the world.
Isaac inherits these promises because of God’s Covenant with Abraham which ultimately was fulfilled in Christ, Who was chosen to be the Seed of Abraham before the foundation of the world.
We continue our reading:
Genesis 26:4-5 “And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; [5] Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.”
Isaac received this inheritance because of Abraham’s faith in the Word. Not because of Isaac’s faith but Abraham’s faith.
We inherit the promises of God because of the Faith of Christ, and not because of our faith.
Galatians 2:20 “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”
The Faith of Christ is how we live. The Faith of Christ is in the Word for He is the Word. We have one faith with Christ when we believe the Word. This is how we are justified as heirs of God.
Romans 8:29-30 “For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. [30] Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.”
The Word (seed) conforms to the Seed (the Son). We become the exact image of the Son. We inherit the birthright (the Firstborn) because we are one with Christ.
When Jacob received the birthright, he was receiving oneness with Christ.
We continue our reading:
Genesis 26:6-14 “And Isaac dwelt in Gerar: [7] And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon. [8] And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife. [9] And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a surety she is thy wife: and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, Because I said, Lest I die for her. [10] And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us. [11] And Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death. [12] Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the Lord blessed him. [13] And the man waxed great, and went forward, and grew until he became very great: [14] For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.”
Why is Isaac blessed? Because God promised it to Abraham even before Isaac was born. Out of that promise (the Word ) to Abraham birthed Isaac. So Issac was not some entity coming to get blessings from God. Isaac began in God, and will therefore end in God. For example, an almond began as an almond seed before it was planted and eventually it will grow into an almond tree ultimately producing more almonds.
We continue our reading:
Genesis 26:15-16 “For all the wells which his father's servants had digged in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped them, and filled them with earth. [16] And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.”
Isaac was not mighty but God, with Whom Isaac was one, is Mighty.
We continue our reading:
Genesis 26:17-24 “And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there. [18] And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them. [19] And Isaac's servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water. [20] And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac's herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him. [21] And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah. [22] And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the Lord hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land. [23] And he went up from thence to Beer-sheba. [24] And the Lord appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake. “
All because of the faith of Abraham.
We continue our reading:
Genesis 26:25-29 “And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac's servants digged a well. [26] Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army. [27] And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye hate me, and have sent me away from you? [28] And they said, We saw certainly that the Lord was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee; [29] That thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the Lord.”
Abimelech recognized the truth. One cannot fight the blessed of the Lord. It’s a lost battle.
We conclude our reading:
Genesis 26:30-35 “And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink. [31] And they rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace. [32] And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had digged, and said unto him, We have found water. [33] And he called it Shebah: therefore the name of the city is Beer-sheba unto this day. [34] And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite: [35] Which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.”
Esau, the man of the flesh goes further and further off the Word.
Let the Word of God dwell in you. Believe and confess the Word as we’ve revealed Him from the First Adam. He calls His Own, in Christ!
Esau despised his birthright because of unbelief. It’s this unbelief that kept them in the wilderness from entering into His rest.
